From Plant to Pot, Pure Tea Pleasure!

Kionyo Tea Factory was established in 2002 and commissioned in 2003 to serve smallholder tea farmers in the Kionyo Catchment. The capacity was 10 million kilograms of green leaf. The factory expanded its capacity to 25 million kilograms of green leaf annually. The factory is managed by the Kenya Tea Development Agency (Holdings) Limited.

The factory was established in 2002 and commissioned in 2003 to serve smallholder tea farmers with a capacity of 10 million kilograms of green leaf. However, due to an increase in crop levels, the Kionyo Tea Factory expanded its capacity to 25 million kilograms of green leaf annually.

The factory is located in Upper Kithangari Location, Abogeta West Division, Imenti South District, Meru County. This is about 236 kilometers from Nairobi City, 30 kilometers from Meru town and 15 kilometers from Nkubu town.

Special Projects

Kionyo Tea Factory has been involved in various projects as stated below;

  • The Greater Meru Power Company; a small-hydro project that generates electricity to the factory plus 6 others in the region. This was done in conjunction with KTDA Power Company (KTPC).
  • Automation of withering and sorting of tea, thus reducing the cost of labour and enhancing the production process.
